TikTok announced on Monday (June 9) that the group plans to increase investment in the UK and create 500 new jobs. The UK is TikTok's largest user base in Europe.

AFP reported that the news coincided with the opening of London Technology Week. "TikTok's number of employees in the UK will increase to 3,000 this year, with more than 500 new jobs," TikTok said in a statement.

TikTok has been attracting attention from Western governments for years, fearing that China may use personal data for espionage or propaganda.

TikTok pointed out that this will bring TikTok's investment in UK infrastructure to about £140 million (about S$240 million).

Preser added: "Our continued growth is based on our strong commitment to security and our commitment to creating a pleasant, secure digital space that sustainably supports creators, entrepreneurs and the wider economy, which is why we invest heavily in security."

The statement said that about half of the UK population (more than 30 million people) use TikTok every month, which is the platform's "largest user group in Europe".

Preser, UK Director and Head of Global Operations and Trust and Security at TikTok, said: "Whether it is creating jobs and innovation through direct investment or the economic contribution of millions of British businesses to TikTok, we are excited to increase our investment and reach in the UK."

TikTok also added that it is investing in a new London office, which is expected to be put into operation next year, and will far exceed its current UK headquarters.
