Retired Chelsea former player Drinkwater was interviewed and talked about his life when he played for Chelsea. He revealed that he would cover up his career upset through alcoholism and socializing with women, and told how the arrest of drunk driving helped his life back on track.

What was your life off the court during your time at Chelsea?

I was a bachelor in London at the time, so... I said without revealing too many details that I was living a bachelor life in London and immersed in this city. I try to enjoy that side of life to cover up everything else.

I use this way to make myself happy because everything else is a mess. Looking back now, I would go out and drink and mess with any girl I could with. That was crazy. You woke up from a hangover and thought to yourself, ‘Damn’, and the joy of last night disappeared and returned to reality. That is not the state a focused football player should have.

Have your experience of being arrested for driving while drunk has become a turning point in your life?

I remember staying in the cell for 23 hours. Usually those things only take two or three hours to sober up, but I was in the cell thinking ‘What the hell are you doing, man? ’This is not you at all. This is not the person you are, nor is it what you want to be. You have to control yourself. It was from that moment that I began to seek help from the outside world on all these issues.

What made you finally decide to end your career?

(the idea of retirement) may have been brewing for a long time. I thought it wouldn't bother me, but now I'm talking about it and it feels like it touches my nerves. I think I'm ready, I didn't stop at my peak, my career slowly faded, which helped me complete the transition.

I feel that I am in a state of being neither up nor down for a long time. I have always wanted to play football, but I don’t get the opportunity to play football at a level that makes me feel valued. I just think that it is meaningless to me like this. I am happy not to play football, and I am happy to play football. So why don’t I shake hands with this sport?

This is everything I know, it has been my life since I was six or seven, and it has never been an easy task. I think my career is coming to an end, which undoubtedly helps me. If I was playing every week at the time and then had to stop because of injury or age, I think that would be more difficult.
