Where do you sit for a long time every day? On average, a person spends about 9 to 10 hours a day, mainly for work. But studies have found that a sedentary lifestyle can increase the risk of dementia, obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and death; British researchers suggest that 20-25 minutes of physical activity a day can offset the risk of death caused by a sedentary lifestyle.

A new study published in the British Sports Medicine Magazine shows that no matter how long you sit every day, increasing the daily physical activity can reduce the risk of death. The researchers combined data from four groups of people wearing wearable devices from 2003 to 2019 to find out the discovery to check whether physical activities can change the association between sedentary behavior and death, and to determine the specific volume of physical activities and sitting time that may affect the relevant risks.

Moderate to intense activities are related to lower mortality rates

About 12,000 people over 50 participated in the study, 5,943 of the participants sat for less than 10.5 hours a day, while 6,042 people sat for 10.5 hours or more a day. After analyzing the data from the death registry, it was found that an average of 805 people died in five years, of which 357 sat for less than 10.5 hours a day, while 448 sat for 10.5 hours or more a day.

researchers pointed out that analysis of wearable devices showed that the risk of death increased by 38% over 12 hours a day compared to those who sat for 8 hours a day, but was limited to those who sat for a total of less than 22 minutes a day. Medium to intense physical activity. Moderate to intense physical activity over 22 minutes a day is associated with lower mortality risks. Low strength physical activity is only associated with lower death risks in sedentary people.

Exercise for 10 more minutes a day, and the death risk is reduced by 15%

Research shows that people who sit for less than 10.5 hours a day can reduce the death risk by 15% if they exercise for 10 minutes a day. For those who have been sitting for more than 10.5 hours, adding 10 minutes of physical activity can reduce the risk by 35%.

Since these findings are based on visual research, causal relationships cannot be established. The research also has certain limitations because it does not consider factors such as diet, movement problems and overall health. Wearable devices cannot classify activity types and sports strengths.
